New bike for young Callum - thanks to the News
AUTISTIC Callum Cross was devastated when thieves stole his bike - but he is now all smiles again thanks to the News.Press Relief, the charitable fund run by the News, has stepped in to replace it.
The seven-year-old was confused when his parents tried to explain his bike had been stolen - but is thrilled with his new Falcon Maniac.
Mum Karen Cross said: "He absolutely loves it.
"His new bike is even better than his old one because the frame is lighter and easier for him to ride as his balance isn't too good.
"It is just ideal for him. We went straight down to the park when we got it and we were clapping him because he was doing so well.
"He can't wait to get home from school to ride it again."
His bike was left overnight in a porch outside his home in Briars End, Witchford, on Friday, April 22. When the family got up the next morning it had disappeared.
Callum struggled to understand why anyone would take his bike from him, but luckily he had no problem accepting a replacement.
Mrs Cross said: "We never know how he will react. He has to watch and learn from others.
"We explained he was going to get a new one and at first he wanted his old one back, but when the bike arrived he was very excited.
"All the neighbourhood children had gathered around to watch him and he can't wait to see his picture in the paper again."
The mother-of-four has even received a tip-off from a neighbour about who could have stolen her son's bike.
She said: "It is only hearsay as no-one saw this chap, but we have reported it to the police.
"I would like to think that the press coverage has made him feel ashamed but someone like that just doesn't care. But Callum is happy again and that is the main thing, thanks to the News and Press Relief."
